This new development by Green Willows Properties Pty (Ltd) occupies an entire city block at a major intersection in the Cape Town CBD and is operated by Tsogo Sun. The 20-storey building comprises two new hotels, namely the Tsogo Sun - Sun Square and Tsogo Sun - Stay Easy, totalling 504 rooms. The project included the refurbishment of the Tothills heritage building on the site, into which the hotel’s conference facilities and bespoke retail opportunities were integrated.
Ruben Reddy Architects were appointed to rationalise and realise the concept design by a UK-based practise. Despite significant time constraints, the documentation was completed ahead of the contractor’s requirements, including ventilated façades, performance glazing and detailed heritage requirements. The juxtaposition of the new 20 storey development with the 3 storey heritage building adjacent to it was harmonised through the use of proportions in the heritage façade being determinants for elements in the hotel podium façade. The hotel tower thus rises above the podium as a new form and enjoys breathtaking views of the entire city bowl from Table Mountain to the harbour.
